themis.

THEMIS: one of the titans. a stern goddess of order & justice, prophecy & oaths.

in greek religion, the personification of justice, goddess of wisdom and good counsel, and the interpreter of the gods' will. according to some sources she was the daughter of ouranus (heaven) and gaia (earth), along with her brother titans, cronus, oceanus, hyperion, iapetus, crius, and coeus, and sisters, tethys, theia, phoebe, and mnemosyneshe.

she was zeus's second consort and by him the mother to horai (seasons), eirene (peace), eunomia (good order), dike (justice), the moirai (fates: klotho, lakhesis, and atropos). some say the moirai were present at the marriage of zeus and themis.

on olympus, themis maintained order and supervised the ceremonial. she was a giver of oracles, and one legend relates that she once owned the oracle at delphi but later gave it to apollo.

themis judged whether the dead went to tartarus or the elysian fields and is depicted as blindfolded so as to be impartial. when people were assigned to tartarus, the erinyes took them. when alive, those who thwarted themis, were visited by nemesis, the personification or goddess of divine retribution.

the cult of themis was widespread in greece. she was often represented as a woman of sober appearance carrying a pair of scales.

that face.

see dorkas run has a great post on l'inconnue de la seine, which got me thinking about the power of a great face.

l'inconnue de la seine (the unknown woman of the seine) was a young woman whose death mask was duplicated, sold and became an inspiration to numerous artists during the 1920s and 1930s.

...i have heard that in order to find your passion, you need to focus on those things that...when you are doing them, you lose all sense of time. i tend to get lost in images...

lotte.

lotte lenya was born karoline blamauer in hitzing, austria-hungary in 1898. a tightrope walker at age eight, lotte studied ballet and drama in zurich from 1914 to 1920. she moved to berlin to seek work in 1921.

the following year she was seen by her future husband, german composser kurt weill during an audition for his first stage score zaubernacht. due to his position behind the piano, she did not see him. she was cast, but because of her loyalty to her voice teacher who was not, she declined the role. she and kurt did not meet properly until 1924 through a mutual acquaintance. lotte married weill in 1926.

she rose to fame in berlin as the voice of the bertolt brecht-kurt weill musical collaborations, notably the threepenny opera, in which she played a leading role both on stage and in pabst's 1931 film version.

she divorced weill in 1933 but reunited with him in september 1935. when the nazis came to power, she and weill fled through paris to new york, and they remarried in 1937. their second marriage lasted until weill's death in 1950.

after her husband's death, she returned to acting, recreating her legendary role of jenny in a long-running off-broadway revival of the threepenny opera. other stage triumphs followed, including cabaret.

lotte lenya died in new york from cancer in 1981 at the age of 83.

sewing 101: camera cozy

for my first sewing project i decided to make a simple mini pillowcase-type-thing to use as a cover for my new camera.

odd amount of vintage fabric that i picked up at a thrift store.

i cut the amount i thought i would need (eyeballed it -- eff measuring -- at least for now)
ironed the fabric

my new brother!! yea -- thanks bob! :D

sewed a top crease and sewed the sides up. it really is just a simple mini-pillowcase. i had to sew up both sides because of the way i cut the fabric.

voilà! camera cozy ready to go.
the only problem was getting a picture of my camera in the camera cozy...oh well!

next up: practice, practice practice...and then a simple skirt!

guy.

i spent part of the afternoon mesmerized by guy webster's photographs. he took one of my favorite set of photographs of nico -- just after she had dyed her hair red. legend has it, she had just discovered jim morrison's penchant for red-head irish shanties.

guy webster was born in los angeles in 1939. he has photographed musicians, actors and other artists for over 40 years. wikipedia suggests that "a documentary about his photographic work is in progress."
